Day 12 – Trout River

I woke up having slept well despite the skylight in the Glamping Dome that alerted me to the very early sunrise. Today was my off day, and what better way to spend it than to tool around on the motorcycle without all the gear attached.

First stop in Woody Point to do a Zodiac (Rubber Dinghy) tour of one of the fjords that make up Gros Morne National Park. Learned lots about how the area was formed, what the Tablelands are (We’ll get to that later), how geologically everything fits together. She also told us a few of the local stories (A rock name “Old Man”, a Ghost Story about a man that tragically died at sea and his “oilskins” washed ashore in the place he would often hang out), showed us an eagle (Now I understand the binoculars people brought) and bounced us through the waves.

As we made it back to land, the rain started to threaten and I decided to try the sister restaurant to Seaside (Trout River) called Merchants Warehouse. Had a salad and a yummy sandwich, 0% Coronas, another Cloudberry Parfait and watched the torrential rains on the water of the fjord. When it didn’t let up after 2 hours I zipped up my gear and rode back to the domes in Trout River.

Good time to relax a bit, until around 4, the rain cleared, the sun came out. I quickly hopped on the motorcycle again to do the 4km Tablelands hike.

Learned on the water earlier in the day, the Tablelands are one of 3 places where the earths mantle has broken through the crust and is accessible to us on the surface. The top was flattened by a glacier and the whole lump of rock sticks out like a sore thumb.

I hiked around, then went back, packed my gear for tomorrow and went to Seeside again, to eat dinner and try to use their Wifi and try to write some blog posts. I had their speciality, the scallops, and was impressed. As for the Wifi, it was having problems and I eventually gave up.
